Its phonetic value is that of the letter r distinctly pronounced.The foll name of the letter is مهملە راء, in distinction from the letter ز . It is also termed راء قرشت (the ر of the word قرشت in the ابجد formula).In chronograms it has the numeral value of 200. It does not join to a succeeding letter. It is one of the letters reduplicated in pronunciation when preceded by the Arabic definite article; as الرحمن er-rahmân.In the dates of letters, the letter ر represents the month Rebiu’l akhir ربیع الاخر. It also represents, sometimes, the words قمر (the moon) and نهار (the day).The represents the ز in almanacs and mathematical tables, etc., and thus stands for the numeral 7; as; بر 17. It sometimes represents Saturday, as the seventh day, and Scorpio, as the seventh sign of the Zodiac.The letter ر is one of the mystical letters placed at the head of certain chapters of the Qur’an, singly or in combination and read by their names in full.From the ease with which it is pronounced, the letter ر has been termed the ass of the poets (حمار الشعرا).In a few words, the ر is changed into ل in the vernacular of the common people; as برادر birâder, vulg. bilâder.In Turkish Grammar, the letter رends the third person singular of the aorist tense indicative, and the active aorist participle of all affirmative verbs by being added to the root of the verb; as, قیرار kırar, گیدر gider, اریر erir, اصرور ısırır, اقور okur, etc. It also forms or helps to form the causative verbs by being suffixed to the root of the simple verb. Generally, in this case, the causative syllable added is در dır, dir; as, ایندر indir, endir; قیردر kırdır; which becomes ur, or ur, by assimilation; as, اوردر vurdur, قودر kodur, etc. But in a few cases the causative form is made by the insertion of a letter ر alone; as, گچور or گچر geçir.
