OS / REDHOUSE TURKISH AND ENGLISH LEXICON-1890

The 24th letter of the Arabic, and 27th of the Persian and Turkish alphabets. Its phonetic value is m. It has the numerical value of 40 in chronograms and astronomical tables. In the dates of letters it is the abbreviation for محرم muharrem, the first month of the Arabian year. In philological and similar works, it is the abbreviation of the word معلوم (well known). At the end of a writing or book it stands for the word تم (it has become complete), in the sense of finis. As the abbreviation of the word یوم (day), it is used in calendars to represent Saturday. It is one of the symbolical letters inscribed at the commencement of chapters of the Qur’an.In Arabic grammar and derivation, the letter م fills several very important functions as a servile initial to derivative words. In the first place, it is the initial letter, in words deriving from the primitive triliteral chapter, of the passive participle (مفعول اسم nomen patientis), a servile long vowel و being then inserted between the second and third radicals; as: فعل fe’ala (he did), مفعول mef’ûl (done); قتل katele (he killed), مقتول maktûl (killed). In the second place م is the initiaI of the primitive derivative named the noun of time and place (اسم مكان اسم زمان), and also the noun of receptacle (ظرف اسم); as, مكتب mekteb (a place for writing, a school), موضع mevzı’ (a place of putting, of situtation, a site). These forms are sometimes verbal nouns (مصدر میمی); as, مقتل (a killing); and sometimes nouns of the place of abundance (كثرت اسم); as, مأسدە (a place of lions). It is also the initial of a class of derivatives, which designate the instrument of action (اسم آلت); as, مفتاح miftâh (r. فتح) an opening tool, a key, مقراض mikrâz (r. قرض) a clipping tool, a scissors. These forms are sometimes nouns of the vessel (اسم وعا); as, مبول mibvel (r. بول) a urinal, محلب mihlib (r. حلب) a milking-pail, etc.In the derived chapters, the م is the initial of every active participle (فاعل اسم) and passive participle (مفعول اسم) the only difference in each pair being that the active participle has esere as the vowel of its second radical, whereas the passive participle has üstün.The form of the passive participle (rarely) becomes also a verbal noun, or a noun of time and place. It is also the initial letter of the first verbal noun of the third chapter of derivation, being then movent with ötürü.In Persian Ottoman words the only grammatical use of م is as a final servile preceded by ütürü, to form the ordinal numbers; as, یكم yeküm (first), دوم düyüm, (second), etc.In Ottoman grammar, the letter م has many important uses. Movent with üstün, it forms, as a servile termination, the root of the negative verb; as, گیمامك gîmemek (not to wear); گینمامك giyinmemek (not to put on); سویلشمامك süveyleşmemek (not to converse together); etc.Followed by ق or ك it forms the servile termination of the infinitive of every Turkish verb.As a servile final preceded by esere (except in the optative and conditional), it forms the first person singular of every tense of the verb; as, یازیورم yazıyorum (I am writing); یازیوردم yazıyordum (I was writing); etc.As a servile final preceded by a vowel and added to a primitive verbal root, it forms a noun of action, and also a noun of quantity performed by one action; as, آتیم atîm (an act of throwing; a quantity thrown at once; a distance to which one act throws).Joined as a servile final to a noun, substantive or adjective, it is the verb substantive I am; as, آدمم adamım (I am a man). With substantives ending in consonants, it is the possessive pronoun of the first person singular; as, آدمم adamım (my man) اوغلم oğlum (my son). But if the substantive end in a vowel, the possessive pronoun becomes a final to the Iast syllable of the substantive itself; as, بابام babam (my father).A very peculiar trivial use of the letter م in conversational Ottoman Turkish, to express a collection or a distinction of various things, while naming only one of them, is by repeating the name of that thing with its initial letter changed into م; as اساس مساس، آلای مالای giving the meaning of “and such things”.
