The twenty-sixth letter of the Turkish and Persian alphabets, twenty-third of the Arabic. Its phonetic value is that of l. It has the numerical value of 30 in chronograms and mathematical formulae. It represents the lunar month Shewwal in the dates of documents.In Turkish grammar, quiescent itself, and preceded by an esere vowel, it forms the passive verb when suffixed to the active root; thus; سو love thou, سول be thou loved. In this use the ل is sometimes replaced and sometimes preceded by ن .The ل of the Arabic definite article remains unchanged in pronunciation when preceding an initial ل. But exceptionally the word الذی suppresses the ل of the article in writing, and reduplicates the radical ل in pronunciation.In the Arabic definite article ال, the ل is deemed the essential part of the word, which, in consequence, is always mentioned as the ل of definition, (لام التعریف) .
