a. That cleaves, rifts, splits.

اَلْكَافُ [el-kâf] (حَالٌ [hâl] vezninde) Hurûf-ı hecâdandır. Ve harf-i ma’nâdan harf-i cerr olur, teşbîh ma’nâsına delâlet eder. Ve ‘inde’l-ba’z ta’lîl için dahi gelir; ve minhu kavluhu ta’âlâ: ﴿كَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا فِيكُمْ رَسُولاً﴾ أَيْ لِأَجْلِ إِرْسَالِي ve kavluhu ta’âlâ: ﴿وَاذْكُرُوهُ كَمَا هَدَيكُمْ﴾ أَيْ لِأْجَلِ هِدَايَتِهِ لَكُمْ Ve isti’lâ için gelir ki عَلَى mürâdifi olur; tekûlu: كُنْ كَمَا أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَيْ عَلَى مَا أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِ Ve كَيْفَ أَنْتَ kavlinin cevâbında denilen كَخَيْرٍ lafzındaki kâf dahi عَلَى ma’nâsınadır ki عَلَى خَيْرٍ demektir. Ve mübâderet için gelir مَا lafzına muttasıl oldukta; tekûlu: سَلِّمْ كَمَا تَدْخُلُ وَصَلِّ كَمَا يَدْخُلُ الْوَقْتُ Ve bu teşbîh fürû’undandır; lisânımızda dahi hemân içeri girdiğin gibi selâm ver ve hemân vakt girdiği gibi namâzı kıl ta’bîr olunur. Ve ba’zen tevkîd ifâdesi için ziyâde kılınır; ve minhu kavluhu ta’âlâ: ﴿لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ﴾ Ve gâh olur ki مِثْلٌ kelimesine mürâdif ism-i cârr olur, ‘alâ-kavlin bu mahal zarûrete mahsûstur. İşbu “يَضْحَكْنَ عَنْ كَالْبَرَدِ الْمُنْهَمِّ” mısrâ’ında olduğu gibi ki عَنْ مِثْلِ الْبَرَدِ demektir. Ve gâhca zamîr-i mansûb ve zamîr-i mecrûr olur, ke-mâ fî kavlihi ta’âlâ: ﴿مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ﴾ Ve ism-i işârete lâhık harf-i ma’nâ olur, ke-kavlike كَذَلِكَ ve تِلْكَ Ve gâh olur ki zamîr-i munfasıl-ı mansûba lâhık olur, إِيَّاكَ ve إِيَّاكُمَا gibi. Ve ba’zı esmâ’ ve ef’âle lâhık olur, حَيَّهَلَكَ ve رُوَيْدَكَ ve اَلنَّجَاكَ gibi. Ve أَخْبِرْنِي ma’nâsına olan; أَرَأَيْتَكَ kelimesine lâhık olur; tekûlu: أَرَأَيْتَكَ هَذَا الَّذِي كَرَّمْتَ عَلَيَّ أَيْ أَخْبِرْنِي Mütercim der ki bu ma’nâ mecâz-ı mürsele mebnî isti’âredir, zîrâ rü’yet ikvâ-yı sebeb-i ihbârdır. Ve fehm talebine mevzû’ edât-ı zikr ve talebe mevzû’ sîga-i emr irâde olunmuştur.

اَلْقَافُ [el-kâf] Hurûf-ı hecâdan bir harftir. Ve قَافٌ [kâf] Küre-i arzı muhît olan dağın ismidir. Ba’zılar 'indinde mâddesi yeşil zümürrüddendir. Rûy-i zemînde bir belde yoktur illâ ki onda o dağın 'ırkı sârîdir. Ve ona bir melek mü’ekkeldir. Hazret-i Hak celle ve 'alâ bir kavmi hasf ile helâk eylemek murâd ettikde o firişteye emr buyurup o 'ırkı tahrîk eylemekle kavm-i merkûmu hasf ve ihlâk eder. Şârih der ki o firiştenin ismi Salsâ’îl’dir. Ve ba’zılar 'indinde قَافٌ [kâf] kur’ân-ı kerîm’in ismidir. Mütercim der ki Yûnân kitâblarında dahi قَافٌ [kâf] ki küre-i arzı muhît olan dağın ismi olmak üzere mersûmdur, Yûnânî de dahi قَافٌ [kâf] ıtlâk olunur. Ve Kûh-ı Elbürz قَافٌ [kâf]tan bir kıt’a olmak üzere mersûmdur. Ve sûre-i kâf evvelinde müfessirîn ma’ânî-i 'adîde dahi beyân eylemişlerdir.

The twenty-fourth letter of the Turkish and Persian alphabets, and twenty-first of the Arabic. Its phonetic value is that of hard k.The letter ق is the modern Semitic representative of the Phenician letter of the same name, adopted into Hebrew as ק, in the same place in the alphabet which it occupies in the ابجد formula as the first letter of the word قرشت, the four letters of the word standing in the same order in the Hebrew, in the archaic Greek, in the Latin, and in all complete modern European alphabets (q, r, s, t). For this historic reason, and also because the alphabets of Islam, like the Hebrew, distinguish severely between the hard letter ق and the soft letter ك, the transliteration of the present lexicon, in accordance with the judgment of the ripest scholars, represents the ق with q and the ك with its true historical equivalent k.The letter ق exists in no original Persian word. But under the influence of the Arabic, a few Persian words are found sometimes written with ق, as their Arabicized form. A certain number of originally Turkish words, adopted of old into Persian, are also written with ق, convertible at times into غ or into ك. Under these varying forms, old original eastern Turkish words, have passed into modem Ottoman Turkish as Persian words, and are grammatically treated as such.In Ottoman words of Turkish origin, the ق, as an initial of a word or syllable is always followed by a hard vowel, and in this case the letter never suffers any grammatical change.Theoretically ق can never be medial in a syllable, in words of more syllables than one, it may be the final of a preceding syllable, or the initial of a following syllable; and in neither case is it liable to grammatical change. In words adopted from Arabic, it becomes a false medial sometimes in a syllable; that is, in reality, two Arabic syllables are fused into one; as, رقص raks (Arabic rak-sun, etc.), وقت vakt (Arabic vak-tun, etc.).As the final letter of a Turkish word of more than one syllable, the letter ق, under rules explained in the grammar, becomes changed into غ before vowels, thus; طاوق طاوغك، قازیق، قازیغڭ،; etc. If the word is Arabic, this rule does not apply; thus, توقیق توفیقڭ، etc. In a Turkish monosyllable, a final ق remains unchanged sometimes, though not always; thus: اوق اوقڭ، چوق، چوغڭ،; etc. ق has the numerical value of 100 in chronograms, etc
