vulg. zel The eleventh letter of the Turkish and Persian alphabets, and the math of the Arabian letters. Its phonetic value in Turkish is z; in Arabic its common value is d, but its correct Arabic pronunciation is th as in the. Its numerical value is 700. To distinguish it from the letter د . this letter is called ذال معحمە and ذال تخذ It does not join to the next following letter.The ذ is one of the letters which are reduplicated in pronunciation when preceded by the Arabic definite article.In dates of letters and documents, ذ is used as the abbreviation of the month ذی الحجە .The letter ذ is used, correctly, in Arabic words alone.Conventionally, this letter is used in a certain number of Persian words, deemed to have been Arabicized and to be correct, as پذیر etc.; but no correctly written Turkish word can contain the letter.

i. [ar. zâl. is.] Elif-bâ terkîbinin on birinci harfi olup, Arapçadan gelme kelimelere ve birkaç Farsça kelimeye mahsustur. Arabîde Yunanîlerin δ harfi gibi peltek bir telaffuzla okunursa da, Türkçede bu ses mefkûd olduğundan lisânımızda “z” gibi okunur. zihin, lezzet, hitâm-pezîr gibi. eski akvâm-ı Sâmiye dahi bu mahreci kaybetmiş olduklarından, İbrânî ve Süryânî elif-bâsında mevcut olmayıp, “ثخذ sehhaz ضظغ dazzığ” hurûfu miyânında Araplar tarafından zamm olunmuştur. asıl ebced sırasında yirmi beşinci harf olup, (dal) harfine müşabehet-i şekliyyesinden dolayı onun sırasına geçirilmiştir. ebced hesâbında 700 rakamına muâdildir. eski usûl üzere muhtasar tarihlerde zilhicceye, ve “ا elif” ile beraber “ذا za” zilkadeye alâmettir.
