Arabîde Yunanîlerin δ harfi gibi peltek bir telaffuzla okunursa da, Türkçede bu ses mefkûd olduğundan lisânımızda “z” gibi okunur. zihin, lezzet, hitâm-pezîr gibi. eski akvâm-ı Sâmiye dahi bu mahreci kaybetmiş olduklarından, İbrânî ve Süryânî elif-bâsında mevcut olmayıp, “ثخذ sehhaz ضظغ dazzığ” hurûfu miyânında Araplar tarafından zamm olunmuştur. asıl ebced sırasında yirmi beşinci harf olup, (dal) harfine müşabehet-i şekliyyesinden dolayı onun sırasına geçirilmiştir. ebced hesâbında 700 rakamına muâdildir. eski usûl üzere muhtasar tarihlerde zilhicceye, ve “ا elif” ile beraber “ذا za” zilkadeye alâmettir.
